AI for cobblers — where it really saves time
You stitch, glue, fit heels and soles, cut keys and care for leather. The writing comes on top: price lists, enquiry replies, Google profile, newsletters, reviews. That is exactly where AI helps — not with the repair, but with the writing. Here is what actually works and what does not.
What this is not about
AI does not stitch a seam, does not glue a sole and cannot tell from a photo whether a shoe is still worth saving. If someone tells you AI replaces your diagnosis and your craft, walk away. What AI can do: take the office work off your hands that waits after the workshop closes. For a shoe repair shop that is often worth more than any big promise.
1. Draft service and price-list texts
Straighten a heel, new sole, repair a seam, replace a zip — you know what the service covers and what it costs. What eats time is wording each line item so customers understand it. Give an AI chatbot your keywords — "renew rubber heel, men's shoe, both sides" — and have it build a clear, short description. The prices come from you; AI only puts the service into a form customers grasp at once.
2. Answer enquiries
"Can this still be fixed?", "How long will it take?", "When can I pick it up?" — politely, clearly and without long deliberation. You enter the key points and AI drafts a friendly reply in your tone. A rough feasibility estimate and a timeframe can be pre-worded — but with "can this be fixed?" the rule always holds: check on the shoe first, then commit. AI writes the reply, it does not replace looking at the shoe.
3. Online presence and Google profile texts
Opening hours, services, how to find you, a short description of your workshop — texts needed for the Google business profile and your own site that still get left undone. Enter the key details and have clean, readable texts built. You set the facts — address, hours, what you do — AI only fills the gaps between them, it does not invent them.
4. Newsletters and social on season, care and offers
The winter check for boots, a care tip for smooth leather, a short offer before the wet season. Texts you often write on the side and that therefore get left hanging. Give AI the key points — what you offer, when, for which material — and have a draft built that you only need to bring into your tone. Which tip suits which material you decide.
5. Reply to reviews and maintain standard texts
Replying to Google reviews shows you care — but who feels like coming up with replies in the evening? Enter the review and have a suitable response suggested. With criticism the rule is: stay factual, keep it short, no justifications. In the same way, recurring texts — pickup notes, general care notes, an opening-hours notice — can be written cleanly once and then reused.
- AI does not replace the repair diagnosis. Whether and how a shoe can be saved you judge on the shoe — not with AI.
- No binding feasibility or price commitment from a distance. See the shoe first, then commit.
- AI care tips differ by material (smooth leather, suede, textile). Blanket tips can do damage — you check them before sending.
- The craft — stitching, gluing, soles, heels — stays yours. AI only writes the texts.
- Do not enter full customer data into free consumer tools.
Which tools fit?
To start, a single chatbot is enough (ChatGPT or Claude). Anyone who wants to half-automate enquiries and texts should look at tools with EU hosting. You will find a sorted, honestly rated overview in our AI Tools Radar — there you can filter by use case instead of wading through advertising.

Frequently asked questions
- Is AI worth it for a cobbler?
- Yes, if you have a lot of writing to do: service and price-list texts, enquiry replies, Google profile, newsletters, reviews. That is exactly where AI saves time. It changes nothing about the repair itself — sole, heel, stitching — that stays your craft.
- Can AI judge whether a shoe is repairable?
- No. Whether and how a shoe can be saved you judge on the shoe itself — not with AI. A binding feasibility and price commitment only comes once you have had the shoe in your hands. AI only helps you word the reply nicely afterwards.
- Can I have AI write service and care texts?
- The text part and the structure, yes. The services, prices and the care tips that depend on the material you provide and check yourself. AI writes the wording, it does not assess the shoe or the material for you.
- Is my customer data safe with AI tools?
- Use tools with EU hosting or business plans with a data agreement. Do not enter full address or personal data into free consumer versions.
