AI for well drilling & boring companies — where it really saves time
You sink boreholes, build garden wells, install pumps and ground-source probes. The paperwork gets done in the office in the evening. That is exactly where AI helps — not in the borehole, but with the writing. Here is what actually works and what does not.
What this is not about
AI does not drill a hole, does not assess the subsurface and does not install a pump. If someone tells you AI will double your turnover, walk away. What AI can do: take the office work off your hands that steals your evenings. For a drilling company that is often worth more than any big promise.
1. Write quotes and cost estimates faster
You know the drilling metres, the casing, the pump type and your rates. What eats time is putting it into clean wording. Give an AI chatbot the keywords for what is being done — "drill a garden well, install casing, set a submersible pump, connect a domestic water system" — and have it build a clear quote text from that. You enter the metres, quantities and prices yourself. The tool delivers the form, you deliver the numbers.
2. Pre-draft permit enquiries
Before a borehole there is often correspondence with authorities: an enquiry to the water authority, a cover letter for the drilling notification, a follow-up on the status. AI helps prepare these texts clearly and completely — you enter the key data, AI puts it into a clear form. But which permit is needed and whether it is granted is always decided by the authority, not by the tool.
3. Answer appointment and customer emails
Enquiries, appointments rescheduled because of weather or machine availability, questions about the invoice — all polite, clear and without long pondering. You enter the key points, AI drafts a friendly reply in your tone. Especially with difficult emails (a complaint, a postponed drilling date) it helps to have a draft made first and then smooth the tone, instead of typing in anger.
4. Pre-draft reports and handover documentation
The bore log, the measured values and the technical assessment you do yourself — no one takes that off your hands and that is how it should stay. But turning your notes into a clean report, drafting handover documentation for the customer or wording a recurring maintenance note: that is where AI saves time. You provide the values and results, AI turns them into clear sentences. The technical assessment stays one hundred percent yours.
5. Acquisition, website and social media
A short description of your services for the website, a post about the finished ground-source borehole, a job ad for the new drilling assistant. All texts you rarely write and that therefore take ages. AI gets you to a usable draft in five minutes that you only need to adjust.
- AI does not replace a geological or hydrogeological assessment. Where and how deep you drill you decide technically, in case of doubt the expert report counts.
- It does not replace a water-rights or official permit. What is allowed is decided by the authority, not by the tool.
- It does not replace a drinking-water analysis. Water quality is settled by an accredited laboratory.
- It does not calculate correct prices and sometimes invents details. Read every text against the facts before it goes out.
- Do not type sensitive customer or site data into free tools — the GDPR applies to you too.
Which tools fit?
To start, a single chatbot is enough (ChatGPT or Claude). Anyone who wants to half-automate enquiries and emails should look at tools with EU hosting. You will find a sorted, honestly rated overview in our AI Tools Radar — there you can filter by use case instead of wading through advertising.

Frequently asked questions
- Is AI worth it for a small drilling company?
- Yes, if you have a lot of paperwork: quotes, enquiries, reports, acquisition. That is exactly where AI saves time. For the drilling, the pump installation and the on-site assessment it changes nothing.
- Can AI take over the geological or hydrogeological assessment for a borehole?
- No. Where and how deep you may drill is settled through an expert report, the bore log and the authority. AI only helps put your notes and findings into clear wording, it does not replace an expert report.
- May I use AI to create a water-rights permit or a drinking-water analysis?
- No. The permit and the drinking-water analysis go through the authority and an accredited laboratory. At most AI can pre-draft the cover letter and application text, the review and approval is done by the responsible body.
- Is my customer and site data safe with AI tools?
- Use tools with EU hosting or business plans with a data agreement. Do not enter full address, property or personal data into free consumer versions.
