Here is what actually works and what does not.
What this is not about
AI does not inoculate substrate, does not spot contamination and does not tell you whether a batch is ready to harvest. And most importantly: AI does not identify mushrooms. If someone tells you AI replaces your experience at the grow room, walk away. What AI can do: take the office work off your hands that still waits after the harvest — product texts, restaurant emails, instructions, newsletters. For a small farm that is often worth more than any big promise.
1. Draft product and variety texts
Oyster, shiitake, maybe a more exotic variety — you know how they grow, how they taste and what a kitchen does with them. What eats time is writing it up cleanly for the farm shop, the web shop and the market stall. Give an AI chatbot your keywords — "oyster mushroom, grown on straw substrate, nutty, firm bite, great for frying" — and have it build a clear product text from that. All details on variety, cultivation, taste and use you check yourself — AI writes the wording, it does not know your cultures.
2. Restaurant and wholesale communication
Restaurants and shops want to know what is available this week, in what quantities and when you deliver. These emails resemble each other — and that is exactly why AI can help. Enter the key points — varieties, available quantities, delivery days — and have a clear, friendly message built. A standard offer for new restaurant customers can also be set up cleanly once and then adapted per enquiry. All numbers on quantities, prices and delivery times come from you — AI does not invent them.
3. Grow-kit and workshop texts
Anyone selling grow kits needs an understandable instruction sheet: cut open, mist, location, harvest. Have the instructions set up as reusable text blocks per step that you only adapt for each variety. The same goes for workshop descriptions: programme, audience, what participants take home. The technical content and the dates come from you — AI puts them into a form that beginners understand too.
4. Newsletters and social about harvests, market days and recipe ideas
A post about the fresh harvest, an announcement for Saturday's market day, a general recipe idea for shiitake. Texts you often write on the side and that therefore stay undone. Give the AI the key points — what was harvested, where your stall is, what works in the pan — and have a draft built that you only bring into your own tone.
5. Answer enquiries and reviews
"Do you have shiitake this week?", "Do you also deliver to restaurants?", "My grow kit is not fruiting — what now?" — polite, clear and without brooding for long. You enter the key points, AI drafts a friendly reply in your tone. Replying to Google reviews also shows that you care. With criticism the rule is: stay factual, keep it short, no justifications. Recurring answers — pick-up, storage, cold chain — you set up once as standard texts and reuse them.
- AI does not replace your food-labelling duties and hygiene. Freshness, cold chain, food information rules and clean production are your responsibility.
- AI does not identify mushrooms. Never pass on AI answers about the edibility of wild-picked mushrooms — a mix-up is life-threatening. You sell only your controlled cultivation.
- No health or healing claims about mushrooms. Health-claims rules apply — advertising with "medicinal mushrooms" is legally delicate.
- AI claims about varieties, substrate and cultivation can be wrong. Always check them against your own experience.
- Do not enter full customer data into free consumer tools.
