AI stocks hype check
Since the AI wave, almost every stock wears the word "AI". Some companies really earn more from it — for many it's just marketing. Here are the honest questions to tell the difference before you jump on a hype. No prior knowledge needed.
Why everyone says "AI" right now
"AI" in an earnings report or press release often lifts the price short-term — so everyone says it. The catch: the word is free, real AI value isn't. Your job as a reader is to separate the story from the value.
The 7 hype-check questions
1. Does the company earn more from AI — or just say so?
Look for real traces in the numbers: more revenue, better margins, new products. If AI only shows up in the deck but not in results, it's a sticker.
2. Is AI the core business or cosmetics?
Does the company build AI into a product customers actually use — or did it just bolt an "AI chatbot" onto its website? Core beats cosmetics.
3. Who earns from the wave — and who pays?
In a gold rush, the shovel sellers (chips, cloud, power) often earn more reliably than the gold diggers. Ask where in the chain the company sits.
4. Is the expectation already in the price?
If a stock already prices in a perfect AI future, "merely very good" is enough for a crash. High expectations = little room for disappointment.
5. How big is the concentration risk?
A large part of the AI rally hangs on a few mega-caps. Anyone who thinks "broadly diversified" but effectively holds the same bet multiple times is less diversified than they think.
6. Does the pattern rhyme with past bubbles?
New tech + boundless promises + FOMO has happened before (e.g. the dotcom era). That doesn't mean everything falls — but that sobriety pays off. History rhymes.
7. Would you buy it without the word "AI"?
Strike "AI" from the story. Is there still a good business left? If the whole thesis hangs on the buzzword, it's hype.

Common questions
Should I buy AI stocks now?
No one can responsibly answer that for everyone — it depends on your situation, horizon and risk. More important than "whether" is whether there's a real business behind an "AI stock" or just the word. This is not investment advice.
Are we in an AI bubble?
Bubbles are only certain in hindsight. Typical warning signs are extreme valuations, FOMO, and companies that rise only because of the word "AI". That doesn't mean everything falls — only that caution and diversification make sense.
How do I spot a real AI company?
Ask whether AI improves the core business (more revenue, better margins) or only appears in marketing. Real AI value shows up in numbers and products, not in press releases.
