The Seam

A Ruhr Valley saga in three volumes

For a century a miners' family is bound to a colliery that feeds and owns them. When the grandfather breaks the solidarity of the great 1905 strike to save his children, he lays a fault that is hauled up with the coal — through war, dictatorship, forced labour and the dying of the pits, until the last shift closes the shaft in 1989. Written chapter by chapter with Claude Opus — three volumes, 48 chapters, free.

Cover Volume 1 — Going Down

The young hewer Wilhelm Kortmann breaks the solidarity of the great strike out of fear for his family and betrays his butty, Heinrich Brass. His rise to overman begins — and a fault that is carried down the generations.

Wilhelm's son August becomes overman under the Nazi regime and repeats his father's logic: he sends a Polish forced labourer who saved his life into a deadly seam — out of fear for his own position.

How it was made

“The Seam” is a writing experiment: a plot bible fixes the world, the characters, the tone, and the arc across all three volumes; from it, Claude Opus writes the chapters one by one, true to continuity, volume by volume. This English edition is a faithful translation of the German original, “Schicht”. The code behind it is open in the project (ki-schriftsteller/).

It is finished: three volumes, 48 chapters, edited throughout. Download it above as ePub (for e-readers, Kindle via “Send to Kindle”, and any reading app) or as PDF (to read on screen or print). Free, no sign-up, no tracking. No invented reviews, no launch hype: it is here, read it or leave it.

The book is free — so is the newsletter

Honesty note: “The Seam” is fiction, written and edited chapter by chapter with Claude Opus, then translated into English. Voßlohe, the Morgenstern colliery, and all characters are invented; historical events (the 1905 strike, the world wars, forced labour, Rheinhausen 1987, the dying of the pits) form the backdrop, the plot is invented.
